Garden Suite
Manuscript Music
PDF format 1 of 8 (Slide show)
The Mustard Seeds Music composition project was a collaboration with Jane Gardner, pianist and composer based in Edinburgh. We worked together with the concept to create music from the random scatterings of mustard seeds. I prepared a glass box with blank manuscript paper transferred onto acetate sheeting on the top lid and sprinkled mustard seeds into the box, onto wetted blotting paper. The resulting notation is a direct translation of how the seeds formed ‘ notes’.
Jane and I along with two other musicians performed the music at the Royal Scottish Academy Body Parts exhibition in 2005. Percussion was played on new instruments made from garden tools such as rakes and riddles, and the piano was performed by Jane on a keyboard.
There are digital prints made from this series as well as etchings.
