Shipwreck Sandpit, 2014

Designed by Natalie Taylor
Commissioned by North Edinburgh Arts

As part of the North Edinburgh Arts garden redevelopment I was working as artist in residence between 2013-15.

I was keen to replace the existing old iron climbing frame with an attractive play area for the younger child visiting the garden. It also needed to be something large and flexible enough to offer children many different types of play.

After asking lots of local parents and children what they would like to have, we decided on a shipwreck as a theme, and installed 4 tonnes of silver sand, and a self regulating water tap. The platform allows jumping, the ribs encourage climbing and of course the sand allows infinite creative play. It has proven very popular and North Edinburgh Arts offer spades, and buckets for nominal hire.
