Muirhouse is Home
This project was the first commission I worked on with Centipede Project.
The brief was to create a large scale labyrinth on the Muirhouse Avenue brownfield site, but the ground was too hard to cut into on a large scale. I suggested using flowering bulbs to create a similar large scale work, and approached the local school, Craigroyston Primary, as well as the Millenium Centre to involve local children in the process.
Through some experimentation we decided to use the name of Muirhouse itself, like a large scale sign and emblazon it into the land using 3000 daffodils. This process was complete by December 2012 but after further reflection, I suggested creating a phrase that described Muirhouse as the locals see it.
After sifting through 125 competition entries describing their place, the Centipede team chose “ IS HOME” as most appropriate. This was planted in March with local people in bedding plants on a huge scale, timed with the simultaneous flowering of the daffodils.
