This was my first kinetic plant sculpture, conceived initially as a student, and refined for the Royal Scottish Academy Open Exhibition at which it won the George Willie Prize for Sculpture. I wanted to create a tool for plants to ‘express’ something, through a human medium, drawing attention to their creativity, despite their slow speed. The typewriter offered a perfect medium; it could be adapted for plant use, by giving them a chance to manipulate the keys by means of the threads strung in between the letter keys and the letter hammers. After several weeks the plants made a key touch the paper. It was the + –  (plus/minus key).
